The Pale King David Foster Wallace
Publisher: Little, Brown & Company

Written in Response to the Writings of David Foster Wallace. David Foster Wallace's last novel, The Pale King, revolves around the administration of the federal income tax. The structure then partly seems to be that the characters in The Pale King work at the “IRS Regional Examination Center in Peoria, Illinois,” but their stories are told (partly) through their childhoods. There is greatness, even brilliance, to be found in Wallace's unfinished opus, The Pale King. I cannot say why I enjoy reading Wallace so much. But there is also malicious banality obscuring its secrets, which is both the novel's subject and perhaps its undoing. As you likely know, The Pale King spirals around a collection of IRS tax-examiner recruits in Peoria, Illinois, in 1985. Earlier this week, I mentioned that The New Yorker has published a work by David Foster Wallace entitled Backbone, an excerpt from The Pale King. The new David Foster Wallace novel sounds like the dullest book of all time. The latest book I have read is by David Foster Wallace, called the Pale King. Major characters: IRS employees.
